Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose the right skip bin size?

Estimate your waste volume first. A 2 m³ mini skip suits a small bathroom renovation. A 4 m³ skip handles most residential jobs. A 6–8 m³ skip suits medium commercial work. For heavy materials like concrete or soil, weight limits are more restrictive than volume — a 4 m³ skip of concrete can easily exceed a 3-tonne weight limit at just half full.

Why is concrete so heavy in a skip bin?

Concrete has a density of approximately 2,000–2,400 kg/m³ (2–2.4 t/m³). A standard 4 m³ skip filled with concrete would weigh up to 9.6 tonnes — far exceeding a typical 3-tonne skip weight limit. This is why skip hire companies often limit concrete skips to half full or charge by weight rather than volume.

Can I mix different waste types in a skip bin?

Most skip hire companies accept mixed general waste. However, some materials require separate disposal: asbestos, tyres, chemicals, liquids, batteries and refrigerants. Mixed loads containing heavy rubble with timber and cardboard can still exceed weight limits before the bin looks full, so estimate weight as well as volume.
