Select the fire class and floor area to get the right extinguisher type, size and quantity per NZS 4503.
The type depends on the fire risk class. Class A (wood/paper) uses water, foam or dry powder. Class B (flammable liquids) uses CO₂ or ABE powder. Class E (live electrical) requires CO₂. Class F (cooking oils in commercial kitchens) requires wet chemical. Most workplaces need a combination.
Under AS/NZS 1851, fire extinguishers must be inspected every 6 months by a licensed fire protection technician. Dry powder extinguishers need a full service every 5 years and hydrostatic testing at specified intervals.
NZS 4503 requires that no person should have to travel more than 30 m to reach a Class A extinguisher in most occupancies. For Class B and higher hazards, the maximum travel distance reduces to 15 m or less.
