Calculate coefficient of performance and energy efficiency ratio for any refrigeration or HVAC system and benchmark against industry standards.
COP (Coefficient of Performance) is the ratio of useful cooling or heating energy output to electrical energy input. EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) is COP × 3.412, expressing the same ratio in BTU/hr per watt. Higher values mean better efficiency.
A cold room at 0–4°C typically achieves COP 1.8–2.5. Values below 1.5 may indicate problems such as dirty coils, incorrect refrigerant charge, or refrigerant leak. Freezers at −18°C have lower COPs (1.0–1.5) due to the larger temperature lift.
COP = Cooling capacity (kW) ÷ Input power (kW). For example, a split system with 5 kW cooling capacity and 1.4 kW input power has a COP of 5 / 1.4 = 3.57. Enter these values in the calculator above.
